In most cases it's quite a bit cheeper to go the XP-2 route than
conventional films. I have my C41 processed at Wal-Mart and
spend about one dollar per roll. Ask for process only, no
cutting. BYOS (bring your own sleaves).
I then scan the color negs, post process and output either to my
own printer or pop it on a memory card to take back in and print
on the machine.
If you are equipped to process your own BW and do a combination
of darkroom and scanning, I'd suggest the Ilford Delta films
(100 and 400) souped in DD-X as they have a slightly fogged base
which greatly improves scanning. Delta 400 is the best scanning
conventional BW film I've used.
