Latvia has quite a varied mix of family names, from what I have seen on a
few visits to Riga, reflecting its past being bounced between Russian and
German "spheres of influence". A quick look for Latvian family names even
threw up one "Piers Herman" which surprised me, just a little.

I hear that a lot. In many past discussions, my parents had confirmed to me
that our last name had not been changed or American-ized. As far as I know,
it is Latvian.
