One thing I learned while looking at the forums at dpreview.com is that
are people who love to stir things up. They are called trolls, from the
fishing term, not the mythological character. They post a message into
a specialized list like the Nikon list and say something like how
technically backward Nikon is and that they are switching to Canon.
They frequently do not post again until the angry responses start to
slow down. They achieve their goal when the responses exceed the 100
message limit in a thread. They are more successful if they sound
genuine and clueless because members of the list then defend them and
the members fight among themselves. The goal is not discussion but
disruption for amusement.
I would say that the same process goes on here when someone posts a
negative off topic quote from someone known for bashing a particular
computer and then when the thread has died someone attempts to revive
it, ironically, not changing the subject from This Thread Should Die.
It is not for purposes of discussion or information. It is just a way
of sticking someone in the eye who is still smarting from the previous
exchange. Don't fall for it. Don't be the source of someone's
entertainment.
