Yes, Gore Tex jackets and other "name brand" (Polo, etc) items sell in
Beijing for ridiculous prices - at Silk Alley anyway. The thing is that
they are most likely "knock-offs" at those prices. I understand name
brand labels are easily available there too, so draw your own
conclusions. So, I'm not sure that you would want to by an E-300 "off
the street" there.
Also I just read that Silk Alley, which is next door to the US Embassy,
will be closing. The Beijing authorities have offered the vendors space
in a new shopping mall nearby, but many are refusing because of the
high rents. It would be a shame to see Silk Alley close, it is a major
attraction for tourists and Beijingers alike.
