I've noticed that if I send "vacation 2 d" it fails to unset at the end. A
"stats" says vacation is on, while an "unset vacation" squawks that it was
never on (but the mail feed does restart).

Does this happen to anyone else?

Hi Andrew ,
I had the same problem in November. I sent a 4 day vacation mail whcih
duly switched off for 4 days but never came back. As you did, I sent an
unset vaction mail and got the 'you're not on vacation' response and even
a subscribe mail thinking that might be the problem (similar response). As
with you the responses were confusing but the feed restarted.
However, the 10 (ish) day vacation I set over Christmas & New Year worked
just fine and dandy. I agree about longer holidays though ;-)
Weird!!
Jason.
