I'm typing this on one of my two Northgate keyboards, one from 1988,
this one from 1993. The '88 'board has seen so much use the letters are
worn off many of the key caps, but it still functions perfectly.
To which, I respond:
My own IBM keyboard, in continuous use since 1987, shows absolutely no
signs of wear on the keycaps. The lettering on the keys is just as
crisp as the day it was new. The lettering is somehow infused into the
keys and can't be simply worn off the surface.
