I contacted Kodak when I started doing B&W work about the implications of
the waste for the city sewers. The guy I talked to said the chemicals in
what I was proposing to use (D-76, indicating stop bath, hardening fixer and
"hypo" remover) were fairly harmless in the amounts I'd be dumping, and the
only consideration was pH and silver - but mixing the developer with the
rest at disposal time would more or less eliminate the former.
He faxed me an article on silver recovery, which was more "industrial" than
I was prepared for, so I started bring the fixer back to neutrality with
household ammonia, then reducing the silver with steel wool. One day I'll
challenge the Hunt brothers for control of the silver market. :-)
An ascorbic acid based developer such as Xtol should be even less problem,
but if you use pyro or selenium toner all bets are off.
