Do Maybach, Porsche, Ferrari, etc. worry about 3% market share? Why should
Apple? It is precisely because they are NOT "commodity" machines that they
can operate on the margins they do. Between my business and home, I have
four windows-based machines. I want to get a Mac just for the
Mac-experience. It's the same reason I drive an MB most of the time. My
Accord is fine, my Chevy truck is great, but the Merc is something else and
I will pay a premium for the experience of driving it.
Mac has its own world, just like Porsche. It has a world of other entities
that support it and provide for its continued state-of-the-art viability.
Not every consumer/capital good needs to be reduced to a commodity. The
entire world is being encouraged to become consumers and some portion of the
consuming public will always want (and reward) true product differentiation.
It really IS that simple.
