PS CS? The WYSIWYG development environment I use? Equivalents to MS
Office, including Access and PP? My son's FruityLoops music writing
program? All the host of other Win apps I and my family use? No, I don't
think they are free. They cost $ and time, and I don't know about your
time, but I value mine. The time and effort to find replacements for all
the little apps, even if many are free or really cheap, and likely live
without some functions? No thanks.
And much the same applies to the Macs. If there were something wrong
with XP and the machines it runs on, sure I'd consider something else.
But, you know, it just runs and runs and .... And 2 flat-bed scanners, 2
SCSI film scanners, 3 printers, tablet, card reader, 3 digital cameras,
external Zip and DVD-R drives, all of them work or have have worked,
most as simple plug and play. Of course I take sensible precautions and
I have never, ever, had a virus, or any of those other nasty worms and
such. Perfect? No, but it's a tool that works, and works well for me.
And why was my Mac lover firend over here to do some setup of her
husband's electronic thingee that serious runners use to log their
miles? 'Cause it doesn't run on Macs.
And somebody said Macs are about the same price/performance ratio as big
name PCs. Maybe, I don't know, but I don't buy those overpriced things.
My Systemax cost me 55-60% of an equivalent Dell, HP, etc. and the bits
inside are all the same or better. You can't do that with Macs.
Excellent support too. Oh, Chris, I dropped a new 200gb HD in my system
and I get to use all of it.
But you won't hear me saying anybody with a system that works for them
should change either. In the computer world, I believe in sticking with
what is working, with change only driven by performance/application needs.
Disclaimer: I make some of my income working on a Windows only
application development system doing apps for Win PCs, so I wouldn't
change for that reason, but, as above, I wouldn't anyway.
All of the major hardware platforms and operating systems are quite
functional and all have flaws. The differences aren't enough to get all
worked up about. Be a rabid sports fan, take up a good hobby, like maybe
photography, use your emotional energy for something more usefull than
computer system advocacy/fandom. It's a mug's game.
