I had a weird occurrence today with my OM-4... I walked past my camera
cabinet and heard this high pitched electronic squeal coming from
somewhere; checking closely, I found it to be coming from my OM-4. I had
pulled it out of the cabinet a day or so ago and checked the batteries only
to find them "dead" per the battery check switch. At the time I did not
remove or change the weak/dead batteries. When I pulled the OM-4 off the
shelf, it was humming away, and when I switched to the Battery Check
position I got a brief chirp at the right frequency for the battery check,
then nothing (no red light on the front, either). Shortly thereafter the
continuous whine resumed, continuing until I removed the batteries. Putting
the spent batteries back restarted the squeal. I checked the old batteries
with a loading meter and they tested well down into the "replace" zone...
So anyway, the question is, what was going on? Has anyone else experienced
these strange wailings from their OM-4s? Did I do any permanent damage? I
haven't replaced the batteries and done any sort of testing yet - any ideas
what I should look for? This OM-4 came to me as one with relatively high
current drain, and periodically it seems to lock up electronically,
clearing up fine with a press of the "Battery Check" switch...
