I think that it is alto-stratus, where the "alto" means of medium
altitude (as opposed to "strato- " meaning low, or "cirro-" meaning
high). The "stratus" means layered cloud. It is also referred to as a
"mackerel" sky and is sometimes the forerunner of a frontal system.
