The standard 7.62mm rifle bullet turns out to be *exactly* 0.3 inch
too!
Never did get why Stephenson got 4ft 8-and-a-half though! Although
there are anectodal reasons around. Does make North American trains
look indecently huge on that narrow bit of track!
