You can't move for scenery and architecture in Scotland, however Kelso
is a fair way away from the really good, 'mountainous' stuff up in the
north. Many of the must-see things near Kelso are actually in England:
Berwick, Bamburgh, Lindisfarne, Dunstanburgh, Cragside, Hadrian's Wall,
Kielder spring to mind. Hadrians Wall is one of my regular haunts and if
you want to venture as far as Tyneside or Durham I'd be happy to give
you a tour.
West of Kelso, there's marvellous scenery around Dumfries & Galloway,
get tuition in pronouncing "Kirkcudbright" before you go. Edinburgh and
Glasgow aren't very far away and both very photogenic (the Necropolis in
Glasgow is really something). Falkirk Wheel, Stirling Castle, Campsie
Fells, Loch Lomond. Kintyre, Jura. Stick a pin in a map of Scotland and
there'll be something worth seeing within 10km It's a fine place and
don't forget to try the deep-fried pizza.
Or you could just do the Pennine Way.
