While the Oly auto-tubes are great, and build quality is better than others
I've seen (OEM or otherwise), their lengths are geared primarily for 50mm
focal length. I've also used them with the 85/2.
I not only have a set of the OM tubes, I also have a set of longer ones
(Vivitar ??), also metal and also auto-tubes . . . although finish isn't
quite as nice as the OM's, and IIRC the flanges are aluminum. In use, they
work just as well. The shortest in the second set is 12mm and the longest
is 36mm. I've found them *very* useful for focal lengths of 100mm to
200mm. I DO NOT recommend stacking more than three tubes, most especially
with longer lenses (with which one might need a fair amount of
extension). The static torque load on the multiple lens/tube/body matings
from a larger lens greatly extended starts to get a bit excessive.
I am not suggesting that one set would displace or be an alternative to the
other . . . that's why I have both . . . I mention this to suggest also
eventually getting a set of the longer ones . . . gives an enormous amount
of flexibility with focal length, standoff from subject and total lens
extension. I recommend first getting the OM's . . . they're what I reach
for first most of the time.
