No - pairing is a time honoured technique within parliaments - why not
use it outside.
Or, better still, adopt the Australian system - a national electoral
body organising compulsory voting on a Saturday with full preferential
voting. Then you can really lodge a protest vote knowing that it will
flow through to a major party.
Forcing people to vote in the US - that should go down well :)

(And we still use paper and pencil, just like Russian astronauts. It
works, even in VERY complex elections).
