in general yes, which is why with digital I always shoot about 1 stop
under....you can then bring back whatever you want in your imaging editor...you
can get perfectly exposed shots this way. If you blow out your hilights there
is no gettign them back in digital, so better to underexpose a bit.

Negative film gives (gave!) reasonable latitude because (and only
because) the subject brightness ratio put the exposure reasonably
inside the straight line portion of the density vs log exposure curve.
The film usually had gentle non-linear "toe and shoulder" that helped
in this.
I presume that digital imaging gives a straight line with abrupt toe
and shoulder, so that significant exposure error gives a far worse
visual result than it would with film. Is this correct?
