I thought we were going for a 'winning' bid; i.e. closest higher.

Boy! this is sure bringing out all the lurkers, including me.
To try and add value to this post, let me give an unofficial
summary of the 28 guesses I saw in Digest # 261:
1500 1893 2107 2287.49
1666 1897.36 2150 2338.63
1667.50 1935.53 2161.20 2375
1850 1975.86 2185 2425
1850 1977.65 2185 2437
1876.72 2002.02 2222.22 2500
1888 2025 2237 2700
Since I already had the numbers in Excel to sort them, I threw
up a scatter plot. It's amazing how linear the bids are,
except at the very ends.
I will guess $2080. By the way, are we playing by "The Price
is Right" rules (highest without going over the real price)
or by just plain closest number? My #2 prediction (after
$2080) is that the auction price will be $1850, and the prize
camera will have to be sawed in half because of duplicate guesses.
