The Alkalines have a little higher voltage but cannot give the same peak 
current. 
Under load the cell voltage will thus most likely drop to less than the NiCd's. 
So it is unlikely to do damage, and likely will work to actually charge strobe. 
But there are no guarantees.   
I would probably chance it, if it were my strobe
