Just a different design method for telephoto lenses, Ali. Google
"catadioptric" and you'll probably find *way* more than you want to
know. :-) The Zuiko 500/8 isn't bad--if memory serves, it's considered
one of the better lenses of this design. Benefits of the design are the
compact size and (generally) low weight of the lens compared to more
conventional telephotos of the same focal length. Drawbacks are low
contrast, the oft-hated doughnut-shaped highlights, and the (generally)
slow, fixed aperture.
