Well, at least Walt didn't suggest epoxy or JB-Weld <g>.
I think there is a little flat leaf-spring that is held in place when the
knob is screwed to the rewind shaft... if that spring is missing or upside
down, the little flip-out handle will flip out freely and flop about. Its
possible this is the cause of the flaccidity of your handle...
