The wife and I hightailed it out of Florida a day ahead of Ivan and a couple of
hours before the 11:00 a.m. mandatory evacuation order this morning after
spending a few days with the elder daughter, son-in-law and our youngest (3 a
month ago) grandson on the gulf coast -- Destin, to be precise. Seems like
Ivan is heading straight for the Florida panhandle, and then the darn thing
looks like it intends to follow us home to Atlanta and be here later in the
week, by which time, although considerably weakened, it still will bring heavy
rain and strong winds.
I didn't take a lot of pictures since photography wasn't a primary goal on this
trip, and I traveled pretty light in terms of OM gear: 2 OM-4Ti's w/MD2s, 7
lenses, etc. But if I get the Provia back before Ivan gets here and/or the
weekend football games begin, AND if I managed to get anything worthwhile, AND
if I'm in a good enough mood, I may post a shot or two. Or I may not.
I'm beginning to find the process of scanning film to be a thoroughly boring
experience, and even the smallest bit of pixel-pushing in post-processing and
tuning up an image is to me sheer mind-numbing drudgery. Maybe it's because
I'm not much of a computer geek. I tend to think of the computer pretty much
the same way I do the garbage disposal: It's a convenient appliance, and I'm
glad to have a good, high-powered one, but I don't get much kick out of using
it. I have always enjoyed real darkroom (one word) work, but I find myself
actually dreading having to mouse around with computer image processing.
I'm considering just becoming a hermit curmudgeon, popping out occasionally to
shoot some film, then holing up in a digital-free, computerless dark room (two
words) with my trusty old Kodak slide projector, mass quantities of adult
beverages, and a big lock on the door. If I'm never heard from here again, you
may assume that's what I'm up to. It's always my goal to get it right on film,
not to fix it later in Photoshop, which I don't even have any of and don't
intend to get none of. I'd much rather spend $700 on film and beer -- mostly
beer.
Now I've got all the list traffic since we left last week (over 300 posts) to
read so that I can see just how many of them may need correction or require
some of my profoundly elucidating commentary. That'll most likely keep me
occupied until I'm cross-eyed, or maybe even longer if y'all have posted more
silly stuff than normal. I took a laptop along on the trip, but I never hooked
it up, so I'm way behind. That's how much of a computer guy am I.
Later, maybe. Or maybe not
Walt, glad to be home
