I was recently on a tour in Alaska which included boats and aircraft. I
took a monopod and never opened it. A cruise ship is a bit steadier but
it is moving. Putting a tripod up on a moving deck does not do much
except transfer the ship's motion to the camera. Hand hold and use high
shutter speeds. So if VR or IS is not an alternative, something long
and fast.
