I got home and looked at my Indian Birds book.
The only bird that fits the photos is a "Large Egret", scientific name Ardea
alba, found all over the Indian subcontinent. The birds with dark bills are
likely immature birds, whereas the ones with yellow bills are adults.
Similar species are the "Great Whitebellied Heron" (Ardea insignis), similar to
the Great Blue Heron of North America, or a "Grey Heron" (Ardea cinerea). Both
of these birds have significant grey markings or black on the head, very
different than the all-white Large Egret.

and that just about covers birding in india :) not much of a naturalist,
despite having family members who are veritable encylopediae.
