I cracked, I've ordered a Billlingham Hadley Pro from Robert White (I
chose the Khaki and Tan option because I like that look, maybe not as
"stealthy" as the black on black but I still don't think the bag
screams "camera bag"). Awhile back I remember looking at Billingham's
site and thinking that something from the Hadley range seemed to fit
what I was looking for but didn't know if I could hold other papers in
it. I hadn't noticed that it does mention the gap between the insert
and the bag that can be used for this purpose (as you mentioned as
well) and without being able to see one locally I didn't want to chance
it (although I have seen some of their bags before and thought they
were really nice). The other thing putting me off was the price. That's
greatly reduced thanks to Robert White, when I converted the price in
GBP to CAD it was less than what B&H lists the bag for in USD! That's a
pretty big savings. I've also ordered 2 AVEA 3 pockets and the leather
pad for the shoulder strap so this should have me outfitted nicely.
