In a commercial CD, the "aluminum" layer is right at the top
surface. My guess is that this metal has much better heat
transferance properties than dye would.
I think the problem is that you need to use a green marker on
the edges of the CD. Without this green marker the music is
reflecting around inside the disc material causing all the heat
buildup.
