When bought new the gun has a little clip-on neutral density filter
(looks around a 4x) that fits over the auxiliary flash. Like your
friend I found the "bare" front facing one rather over powerful and
the filter cures that problem.
Another point: the proper filter mentioned above has a little blank
hole for the built-in sensor to look through. If you jsut put a
diffuser or similar over the auxiliary flash without this "window",
the gun will over-expose badly.
