I don't know too much about professional digital storage, but certainly
digital photo strorage for the average punter is a BIG problem that no
camera manufacturer really addresses in their advertising.
CD-R and CD-RW have a finite lifetime that some have put at around about
%1 failure per annum (initially).
Hardrives are getting cheaper but you would have to keep them in a RAID
array and regularly retire out old drives.
DAT tapes are great for large shorter term backup but I wouldn't want my
photos on there for longer than maybe 5 years. (Not that that's how the
tape should be used)
So I guess for now it's the the HDD (RAIDED would be good) backed to DAT
weekly. That's do-able (is that a word?) for regular data. It doesn't
grow at a rate of knots like digital photography can.
The whole situation will change as things like flash become cheaper, but
for a while we will be getting bigger and bigger files as the Megapixel
count bloats so the situation is likely to remain static.
Add to that the fact that I cannot find ANY data on the compact flash
packaging to say how long I should develop them in the ILFOTEC-DDX. Any
suggestions? <LOL> Fixer?
For now I'm sticking to my celluloid guns...
