I've got 3 pix that I'm trying to 'optimise' at the moment and getting very
varied results. I'm fairly sure I'm going to use PS to 'develop' RAWs and do
some initial sharpening.
However, I'm starting to realise that different tools suit different images
and, if not more importantly, different output targets. At the moment I'm
finding that PKSharpner is good for A4 and above prints while Focalblade is
better for screen output.
I agree that having the process create a sharpening layer is very useful. I
shall take a look at Fred+Miranda's offering.
The holy grail, is of course, to find one sharpening tool to do everything
but I don't think that is going to happen unfortunately.

For PS, I really like the latest incarnation of Fred Miranda's
Intellisharpen Pro. When I went review browsing, it scored about as high
as anything and is really a bargain price
<http://www.fredmiranda.com/software/>. Since different images respond
differently to sharpening, I use the option of adding a sharpening
layer. After sharpening, I can adjust the layer opacity and watch the
sharpening effect change as I move the slider. With most images, I find
that there is a point where things are sharper and nothing looks weird
which is different for different images. I don't know how other
sharpeners operate, but I really like this quick, easy, visual way of
getting just the right amount of sharpening.
