I have the feeling that Olympus expected people to use a flash bracket or
the Bounce Grip if they were serious about flash. The original everready
case did not even have enough room to take a mounted flash shoe.
If one does not want the bulk of a Bounce Grip, a good solution for an
OM-1n or an OM-2n is a small folding flash bracket, a Connector4, a T32 (or
a T20 and a Connector T20), and a short T-series flash cord. The
connector4 (and Connector3) never seem to have a problem with cracking.
Of course with an OM-1 you can can just use a flash backet and PC sync
cord.
I would also suggest removing the flash shoe when you are not using it and
store it in an empty film container; that way the finish on the pentaprism
does not get messed up.
