The name comes from CANadianOiL and it is genetically engineered
rapeseed plant that is very low in erucic acid, the compound that makes
rapeseed unsuitable for human consumption. There are many other
differences as well and the two are not the same. Canola is not the same as
rape-seed.
There is a LOT of BS on the internet about Canola as well, much of it can be
classified as urban myth or worse. It really is difficult to know what to
believe.
