Phil,
Did you have film in your camera when this happened? If you were "dry firing"
it, the film pressure plate reflects less light back to the sensor than real
film would, and this will cause the shutter to remain open until the sensor
picks up enough reflected light. If you had film in the camera, then I would
suspect batteries next. After that, you might need to have it checked by a
repairman.
