Well you didn't mention that they use 60 Hz instead of 50Hz for exactly
that
reason ! I.e. higher frequency enables more power at lower voltage
without
the need for higher current or thicker wires.

Thought it had something to do with the flickering effect from lights
(ie, they were being a bit more stringent than we were !) ? It is
ever-so slightly noticeable with a fluorescent tube here in the UK,
wheras at 60Hz I guess it wouldn't be ?
