It's more than just for labeling, it's a safety factor. In North America
power to residential homes is delivered as centre tapped 220V. To get 110V
you use one of the 220V halves. Since both 110V halves are used throughout
the house, it is imporant to keep track of which wire is the centre (neutral).
That avoids the possibility of plugging two appliances into two different
outlets and getting a possible 220V differential between them.
