Honestly, I did not contact Meridian. Both units were getting long in the
tooth, at least for digital gear -- 7 or 8 years old -- and would've been
retired soon anyway. I was just a tad put off by the fact that the LED display
on the transport began to gradually disappear, one segment at a time, so
finally there was no clue as to cut, time, etc. I found this more than
slightly annoying. At one point, with the missing segments, they almost
spelled a dirty word. (Like a potty-mouth like me would care!) Also, for no
apparent reason, it decided it didn't want to play CD's that it had played
previously without complaint. When it refused to play a certain Grateful Dead
CD, it went into retirement. I've still got it. You want it?
As for the D/A converter, it has two digital inputs. One died for no apparent
reason, and you would think that using the other input would be no problem.
Except the damn thing kept looking for input at the dead one, so with every CD,
since there was no button on the remote to make the switch, I had to haul my
lazy ass/arse out of the recliner and go push the button in the box itself to
change inputs.
The Meridian gear sounded good, but was getting dated, and as is the case with
everything digital, there's newer and better and cheaper stuff coming along
every day. And that includes cameras. I'm at least a year, maybe two, from
going seriously digital. Maybe not even then.
The Philips 1000, however, was a big disappointment. I'll take it in one of
these days and see about getting it fixed. Then I can put it up on the $Bay
and pretend that "I don't know nothing about audyio ekwipmunt." :-)
