Screwmount lenses fit M cameras with an adaptor and are fully coupled
to the metering too! Leica did an amazing job when they shifted from
screw to bayonet - they expected that their user base would want to
keep their old lenses and so not only made the new mount wider to
allow for an adaptor, they even made the new body 1mm thinner to help
the adaptor fit better. Consequently, with a Leica genuine adaptor or
Voigt/Cosina copy, the old lenses work seamlessly on the new bodies.
That's called supporting your user base!
You can't use the LS and M lenses on an R body sensibly - the body is
much thicker. No rangefinder lens will mount on any SLR body and
provide infinity focus. That's why the Voigt SL lenses for Nikon F
mount are mirror lock-up only - they are non-retrofocus designs like
he original Nikkor 21mm and need to project well back into the body.
It would make more sense to buy the cheaper screw mount versions and
a cheap R or L body as you're going to be using a separate finder
anyway. The L body is available from Gandy for around $75 with a lens
- effectively free. That way you'd be ready for the new digital body
too!
