I read that there is a sect in India raising vultures now because of a shortage
in the area. I suppose there is possibly an interesting combination here of
birding photography and photojournalism.

They do in fact do that. My cousin Kathleen and her husband Julian
witnessed that ritual, sometime in the '70's. It's gruesome, but quite
poetic. They mash everything up with rocks so the birds can pick it up
and carry it off, as I recall her saying.
