So get a tripod head suited for that kind of work. Lots of serious heads (and even some cheap ones) have built-in levels. The Bogen 410 geared head has a level and is easy to true up very accurately. My 3047 also has a level, but is a bit more fussy to set exactly Or is your film out of level with the base plate? :-) .
