The OM-2 was designed to "lock up" if the batteries are dead, missing, or
making poor contact, or (more importantly) in the event of a malfunction --
that way, you'll know something's wrong before you get the roll of blank
film back from the processor.
There are any number of problems that will cause the mirror to lock up. The
most common fault, however, is poor conduction of the main- and sub-switches
that provide power to the main circuit. If these switch contacts are
"tarnished" or "chatter", they will provide the main circuit with unreliable
power. Until our tests prove otherwise, we assume every OM-2 needs to have
the switches cleaned and adjusted.
I've noticed that the more an original OM-2 is used, the less likely it will
be that the switches will have tarnished, and the less likely it will lock
up. Probably frequent use keeps the switches "clean". As a corollary,
operating a neglected camera by repeatedly firing it will likely help polish
and clean the switches to an extent, making them operate a bit more
reliably. Still, the most reliable solution would be for the camera to be
disassembled and the switch contacts cleaned, though if you can live with an
occasional lock up....
