I searched the Vision Age issues again and could not find another reference to
the F280.
There are a references to the F280 flash in the Olympus Pursuit issues.
Volume 5. No. 4. 1986 has a small story

Michael,
Thanks for searching and the reference, I think this is online as
well (see link). As you say, they don't specify if they decided to use a new
tube or not :
http://www.geocities.com/maitani_fan/stage_3_2.html
"The design of F280 takes three years and involves forty new patents. The
design team first examines the characteristics of the xenon flash tube,
including optimal gas pressure, flash duration and emission cycle. After
extensive testing, they settle on a flash duration of 1/25sec(40 millisecond)
and an average of 20, 000 emissions per second.
The two semiconductors used in F280 are specially developed, one to control
emission intervals and another to relay data from the camera body to the flash.
A new energy-saving circuit is developed, it saves electric charges used for
emission and stores them for the next. "
One of "special" semi devices listed is just a custom logic array device. One
of the special devices not listed, is one of the commutation capacitors which
has to take unbelievable abuse in this application turning off the enourmous
flashtube currents thousands of times each flash.
The patents are probably interesting to look through, if I get a chance.
