A couple of comments on recently posted photos:
C. H. Ling's photos are a fine example of how conventional wisdom is not always
wise. The use of a 180mm lens for portraits is often discouraged, due to the
lack of dof and the "compression" effect. Even on this list, one person refered
to the "cardboard cutout" effect with a shorter lens. Most of us would use the
85 or 100 in this situation, but C. H.'s results are a dramatic example of how
a longer lens can be a useful. Oh, and he certanly has an eye for the ladies!
The other comment is on a link posted to photos using the 18mm with the Canon
10D. Although it is used with a smaller sensor, it still represents an
effective focal length that surely would be about 28mm (I don't remember the
10D's magnification). Listening to the conventional wisdom tells us that this
lens would reduce the 10D to something more like a Lomo. Oops, guess that isn't
quite right, either.
