I'm about the same as you and have been since I was 7. I went home from
school one Friday in 1972 with a "cold." Saturday my mother took me to
my pediatrician and she sent me home with grape cough syrup. Sunday my
fever spiked so high I lost consciousness. Coming to in the hospital
they told me I had scarlet fever. I remember being confused as to why
everything was so blurry and sounded so strange. I'd lost a lot of my
vision (-5.75 R and -5.25 L) and my hearing was "about the same as a
40-year-old man" according to testing.
Last year my physician told me that there may be treatments available
soon to restore a lot of my hearing and I've been considering some of
the new lasik procedures. It sure would be something to be able to get
back some of the hearing and sight that I lost so long ago.
