Subject: [OM] Re: The MA-1 OM to E-1 adapter will be available in the US
March 31
Sam, I don't think you read my original note whose title is given above
but whose text was dropped off later. Here is the exact question that I
put to the Olympus America E-1 support group.
------------------------------------------------
On the Olympus SLR forum on dpreview.com it is rumored that
the MA-1 (OM to 4/3's) lens adapter recently made availble free of
charge to E-1 owners in Japan will now be made available free of charge
by Olympus America to E-1 owners in the US.
Can you verify that this is true? If so, how will E-1 owners actually
acquire the MA-1 adapter.
-------------------------------------------------
Here is the exact wording of the reply from e-slrpro@xxxxxxxxxxx
-------------------------------------------------
Dear Chuck
Thank you for your e-mail.
Olympus does not manufacture the OM adapter , however we will supply it
to E-1 /OM customers. The adapter will be available as of March 31.2004.
Because the E-1 camera was designed specifically for use with E-1
digital lenses Olympus America cannot guarantee optimum performance if
an OM lens is used on an E-1 camera.
The adapters will be shipped based on availability.
a. The OM 4/3 Adapter does not contain the Olympus brand label.
b. The OM 4/3 Adapter is not to be associated with Olympus, and
issues regarding image quality or functionality are not supported.
c. Image quality may be reduced, and may have soft edges.
d. The OM 4/3 Adapter is not for resale.
e. Only Manual Focus can be used. There is no Autofocus capability.
f. Only Manual or Aperture Priority can be used.
The Aperture needs to be stopped down obtain the correct exposure.
Regards,
E-1 Digital Technical Support
Olympus America Inc.

This answer was not complete so I sent them the following message which
has not yet been answered
---------------------------------------------
Thank you very much for your quick response. I am definitely closer to
purchasing an E-1 now instead of a Canon 10D where an OM adapter is
already available.
You implied that the adapter will be supplied free of charge to E-1
owners but did not specifically state that and you did not address the
question of how the adapter will be acquired by E-1 owners.
Thanks again,
Chuck Norcutt
----------------------------------------------
I will advise the list when I get an answer to this one which is
beginning to look like it won't make it this week since it's already
late afternoon on Friday.
