Actually, it's a cleaned-up revision of a poem I first heard many,
many years ago. Chuck Berry obviously had heard it, too, and he
cleaned it up differently and used it in one of his '50s songs,
like this:
The night was dark, the sky was blue;
Down the alley the ice wagon flew.
There was a crash and somebody screamed;
You shoulda heard just what I seen.
At the risk of offending some, the original went like this:
The night was dark, the sky was blue;
Down the alley the s**t wagon flew.
There was a crash, a scream was heard;
A man was killed by a flying t**d.
I am now definitely going in hiding for the rest of the day.
