Its not sinister, its idiotic! Remember, even the best interpolation LOSES
information present in the original, besides increasing transmission, storage
and processing costs and times. So if they are that stupid, and you can get
money from them nonetheless, why fret: upscale away! Do you get twice the
money for twice the file size?
