Close, the S/370's used the 8" floppy to load the microcode for the processor.
The first product to use the 8" floppy was the IBM 3830 controller for the 
3330 disk storage.  It was announced in June of 1970 and described as "a
device which loads storage control programs and non-resident diagnostic
programs".
