I have John's lines on two 2-13 screens and one 2-4 screen. I think
they're great both as a compositional aid and in leveling the camera.
The only problem as a compositional aid is that they're supposed to be
guidance for the rule of thirds but they only work that way if the final
image will be full frame in a 2:3 aspect ratio.
I asked if he could also cut lines indicating the 8x10 frame ends and
small marks or crosses indicating the rule of thirds points within an
8x10 frame. I thought it was a tough request and, as expected, he did
not want to attempt it. Maybe just as well as I'd have had a pretty
busy screen and the existing lines do help in estimating the location of
other unmarked composisitional points on the frame.
On a related note the Minolta A1 I just bought has a grid pattern and
scale pattern that can be superimposed on the EVF and LCD screens. The
EVF is pretty coarse compared to any SLR but virtual focusing screens is
a cool addition. Too bad they're not programmable as to line count and
placement. Maybe that's next.
