Me and my mate (who is also a photographic nut, alas a C*n*n one)
did a brief bit of research about 6 or so years ago and we though that a
digital back was quite feasible, both optically and technically,
although there were a few hurdles. As far as I know there are digital
backs available for medium format cameras, notably Hassleblad and
Bronica if I remember correctly.
Surely if the 4/3rds sensor is smaller than a frame of 35mm it
should not be too difficult to add such as sensor to a replacement back
(apart from the PSU which I suppose you could bolt onto the base of the
camera a la Motor Winder). I know there are optical constraints and
probably economics constraints (i.e. we get more money if you buy a full
camera instead of a digital back etc. etc) but it must be advantageous
to one manufacturer to make one for 35mm SLRs.
I wish they would make a digital back though, I love my OM-1n. The
thought of having a camera which has more buttons than a keyboard fills
me with horror, and a horrible LCD screen on the back....... yuck!
All the best,
Gareth.
