Not a guru here by any means, Chuck, and you've "stirred up" nothing with me.
I tried the PSP v8 demo and thought it was somewhat improved over v7. Both
have the "Clarify" function under Effects/Enhance photo which can quickly
give some snap go fling! to an otherwise drab photo on the fly, for
instance. I also like its automatic color balance tool better than its PS
equivalent, plus the user can zoom in and out fassssst using the using on
any given point of an image using the wheel, but in the long run PS beats
the pants off it. The new version also has some more functions not in v&
which may or may not appeal, though it can all be done (more painfully at
times) in PS.
All in all PSP is an amazing value. I think with the rebate then offered I
only paid around $30 a few years ago for v7, and for any casual application
it's plenty powerful enough to do a great job and usually suffices for
"serious" work as well.
As for using PS: I've always considered it something of a hassle to use,
it's a freaking memory hog and with bad memory management, etc., but after
you get used to it work flow streamlines somewhat and for all intents and
purpose there are no practical limits to what someone might accomplish with
this software--and that is made easier by the tons of third-party add-ons
readily available, most of them relatively cheap or even free.
Tough to beat a package like that. Then again, through my wife I can buy
Adobe stuff at the educational discount rate. I doubt I'd go near it for
full retail. Frankly, I find Adobe pricing schedules to be offensive.
