Tourist site managements have told me variously that:
* Tripods obstruct walkways in case of emergency.
* Tripods can tip gawking tourists.
* Tripods imply professional photography that could cut into sales of
the official coffee-table books sold in the gift shop.
Those were all pre-9/11, I don't know if they would now say it was a
terrorism fear, or if those were their real reasons and they've stuck
with them.
