My EOS-300D (aka Digital Rebel) shows a similar behaviour -- erratic TTL
exposure control, most likely underexposed.
AFAIK, the built-in flash of the 300D (and maybe the 10D) is of the 'E-TTL'
type, which *needs* data from the lens to operate properly. The 300D *only*
supports E-TTL external flashes (like C*non's EX series) -- any other
EOS-dedicated flash (e.g. Metz with SCA3101) won't fire at all!
On the other hand, the very same Metz 40MZ-3i *with a non-dedicated shoe*
works flawlessly on the 300D+Zuiko combo (in non-TTL modes, of course).
However, the built-in flash *may* be helpful for a bit of fill-flash with
the Zuikos.
